Sabadell economic growth has surged dramatically, positioning the city as a key metropolitan engine according to Mayor Marta Farrés.

The city has recorded a remarkable 25% GDP increase between 2019 and 2023, the second highest among Catalan municipalities over 50,000 inhabitants.

This expansion forms the cornerstone of a new prosperity narrative for the Vallès Occidental city.

Sabadell Economic Growth Fuels Local Prosperity

Mayor Farrés presented the annual balance at the recently renovated La Sala Miguel Hernández cultural centre. The setting symbolised her government’s philosophy that urban vitality stems from daily economic activity as much as industrial zones. Consequently, the growth figures translate into tangible benefits for residents.

Per capita income has risen to €19,197, marking a 6% increase from 2019 to 2022. Farrés directly linked this to visible street-level changes, noting more shops opening and increased consumer spending. Furthermore, the labour market has strengthened significantly with 77,660 jobs now registered, adding 5,000 positions in six years.

The city’s business fabric has solidified with 2,999 companies operating locally. Their combined turnover reached €5.453 billion, growing 10% in just one year. This expansion reflects a deliberate municipal strategy to reduce administrative barriers and support business projects. The approach aims to maintain Sabadell’s productive character by preserving industrial land from residential conversion.

Mayor Farrés emphasised that this Sabadell economic growth should translate into greater regional influence. The challenge now involves sustaining momentum during less favourable economic conditions. Additionally, managing typical pressures of expanding cities, particularly housing and living costs, remains crucial for long-term stability. This local success story emerges alongside broader regional developments, including significant administrative strengthening across Catalonia.

The municipal government’s monitoring of this economic strategy appears to be paying dividends. According to the official balance presented by El Periódico, the objective remains clear: transform macroeconomic growth into real economy benefits. Therefore, Sabadell aims to project itself as an attractive hub within an increasingly competitive metropolitan landscape. This sustained Sabadell economic growth could redefine the city’s role in Catalonia’s economic future.
