SAGA video game fair has concluded its fourth edition with a record-breaking attendance of over 9,000 visitors.

The event, held at La Farga in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, solidified its status as a major hub for the Catalan-speaking gaming community.

These included game companies, clubs, and educational centres. Furthermore, the event featured the prestigious SAGA Awards, honouring the best Catalan-language video games of the year.

Barcelona’s own Nomada Studio took top honours, winning Game of the Year for ‘Neva’. The studio also secured awards for Best Visual Art and Best Sound Design. Consequently, the event highlighted the significant creative talent within the local development scene.

Competitive gaming formed another major pillar of the fair. Activities included League of Legends competitions with FC Barcelona as a special guest. Additionally, organisers hosted the first official international Catalan-language tournament for Super Smash Bros.

Promoting Language and Technology in Gaming

The fair served a dual purpose, celebrating gaming while actively promoting the Catalan language. A dedicated area for the Configura.cat campaign helped attendees learn to set their devices and applications to Catalan. This initiative is supported by several cultural organisations.

Another key presence was Project Aina, a collaborative effort between the Generalitat and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. The project aims to collect Catalan voices to train AI. Attendees could interact with it through a special game, showcasing the intersection of language, technology, and entertainment.

According to a statement from the organisers reported by Europa Press, the fair proves “that in Catalonia there is a large community of Catalan-speaking video gamers that companies must take into account.” This cultural milestone follows other significant developments for the language, such as the recent landmark service law approved by Spain.

The successful SAGA video game fair demonstrates the vibrant and growing niche of Catalan-language digital entertainment. Therefore, it establishes a promising platform for future editions and continued community growth.
