Sagrada Família civic centre has unveiled its dramatic new glass facade following extensive renovation works. The Barcelona landmark’s transformation marks a significant milestone in the €10 million redevelopment project that has reshaped this neighbourhood hub.

The protective coverings have now been removed from the Mallorca street frontage. Consequently, residents can finally appreciate the building’s sophisticated minimalist aesthetic. Furthermore, the transparent design aims to create visual connections with previously hidden interior gardens.
Sagrada Família Civic Centre Transformation Creates Multifunctional Space
This comprehensive renovation represents the most ambitious public works project in the district during the current municipal term. The development integrates several community facilities within a single complex. These include the Sagrada Família – Josep M. Ainaud de Lasarte library, senior and children’s centres, and the neighbourhood market.
Architects have completely reimagined the spatial distribution throughout the building. Accordingly, the ground and first floors will house the senior centre to ensure universal accessibility. Meanwhile, the civic centre itself will occupy the second and third levels with direct access from street level.
The children’s centre will utilise the fourth floor and benefit from terrace spaces on the fifth floor and roof level. Additionally, new staircases, lifts and circulation routes will efficiently separate different user groups throughout the facility.
Energy efficiency has been a key consideration throughout the redesign. The upgraded building is projected to achieve 25% energy savings for heating and cooling systems. This sustainability focus aligns with broader Barcelona environmental initiatives transforming public infrastructure.
The adjacent market building on Padilla street has already completed its own transformation. It now features a distinctive dark green textured facade without external stalls. Moreover, the supermarket within has gained an independent entrance to improve customer flow.
Originally scheduled to begin in 2022, the project experienced delays during the tender process. Work eventually commenced in April 2023 with an anticipated completion date of late 2024. However, the final stages continue beyond that initial timeline as finishing touches are applied.
The renewed Sagrada Família civic centre will significantly enhance community facilities in this densely populated neighbourhood. Therefore, residents can anticipate a modern, accessible and sustainable public space serving multiple generations.
