Sagrada Família cross installation has reached a crucial milestone with the placement of the first horizontal arm on the Jesus Tower.
The 11.3-tonne, 4.5-metre-long component was successfully installed at midday today, marking significant progress toward completing the basilica’s iconic central cross at nearly 170 metres height.
The complex operation began early this morning, with specialised workers carefully lifting the massive piece from its preparation area at the 54-metre level.

Furthermore, technicians faced the challenging task of precisely aligning the arm with the cross’s central core at 163 metres above ground level. The entire process required meticulous planning and execution given the extreme heights involved.
Sagrada Família Cross Installation Progresses Steadily
This installation represents the third major component placed on the Jesus Tower since construction resumed last month. Consequently, workers previously installed the lower arm on November 30th, followed by the central core structure. The arm positioned today faces toward the Nativity façade, with the next scheduled installation targeting the Passion façade orientation.
The cross arms feature a distinctive double-twist geometry characteristic of Gaudí’s design principles. Moreover, they transition from an octagonal shape at the inner connection point to a square configuration at the outer extremities. Three additional arms await installation in the coming weeks, each requiring extensive preparatory work before final placement.
According to recent cultural coverage, the timing coincides with growing public interest in Gaudí’s legacy. The construction team will now focus on installing glass elements and completing interior work on the remaining arms before their final ascent. This careful preparation ensures each component meets the architectural vision while maintaining structural integrity.
The Jesus Tower’s completion will bring the Sagrada Família to its final height of 172.5 metres, solidifying its status as the world’s tallest church. Additionally, this milestone aligns with the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death, which the basilica will commemorate through various activities. The upcoming Sunday marks exactly 100 years since the inauguration of the first tower Gaudí witnessed completed during his lifetime.
