Sagrada Familia cross installation has reached a significant milestone with the placement of the second horizontal arm on the Jesus Tower.

The construction team successfully positioned the crucial component on Thursday, following the installation of the first arm earlier in the week.

This development brings the iconic Barcelona basilica closer to completing its central tower after more than 140 years of construction.

Sagrada Familia Cross Installation Progresses Rapidly

The newly installed second arm faces the Passion façade, while the first arm completed days earlier points toward the Nativity façade. Each massive component weighs approximately 11.30 tonnes and measures 4.40 by 4.50 by 4.50 metres. Furthermore, the pieces feature an octagonal shape at the inner end connecting to the core structure and square formation at the outer extremity.

Construction has accelerated remarkably in recent weeks. Workers previously installed the lower arm on October 30th, followed by the core structure on November 7th. According to official updates from the construction team, the remaining two horizontal arms will soon complete the cross formation.

The ongoing Sagrada Familia cross installation represents one of the final major construction phases. Once all four horizontal arms are positioned, workers will add the vertical arm that will bring the tower to its full 172.5-metre height. Consequently, the basilica will become Barcelona’s tallest structure upon completion.

Meanwhile, the construction board anticipates finishing the tower structure within weeks, potentially by late 2025 or early 2026. However, the completed tower will initially remain covered in scaffolding as interior work continues. The formal inauguration is scheduled for June 2026, coinciding with the centenary of architect Antoni Gaudí’s death.

This historic Sagrada Familia cross installation milestone occurs alongside another significant anniversary. This Sunday marks 100 years since Gaudí witnessed the completion of the San Barnabas tower, the only tower he saw finished during his lifetime. The celebration will honour the architect while preparing for next year’s centenary events, including special citywide celebrations commemorating his legacy.
