Officials at the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona have expressed strong optimism. They believe the Pope will visit the city on 10 June to inaugurate the basilica’s newly completed Sagrada Familia Jesus Tower. This date holds particular significance. It marks the centenary of the death of the temple’s architect, Antoni Gaudí.
Xavier Martínez, the Director General of the basilica, told reporters that it is “very likely” the Pontiff will attend the ceremony. However, the Vatican has yet to provide official confirmation. The inauguration will unveil the Tower of Jesus Christ. This structure stands at 172.5 metres, making the Sagrada Familia the tallest church in the world.

Awaiting Vatican Confirmation for Sagrada Familia Jesus Tower Inauguration
While the basilica’s administration describes themselves as “very hopeful”, they acknowledge that protocol dictates patience. “Everything seems to indicate that the Holy Father is going to come to visit Barcelona and will be able to inaugurate and bless the Tower of Jesus Christ,” Martínez said. He noted that they are waiting for the Holy See to officially pronounce on the matter.
Martínez emphasised the need for clarity soon. He stated that “a visit of this type requires prior preparation” and must be organised months in advance. Sources indicate that the Vatican typically confirms papal travel plans approximately two months before departure.
Diplomatic efforts to secure the visit have been ongoing. In October, Salvador Illa, the President of the Generalitat, met with the Pontiff at the Vatican to extend an invitation for the completion of the work. Cardinal Juan José Omella, the Archbishop of Barcelona, has also been in talks to see “how to fit that trip” into the Pope’s schedule.
The Tallest Church in the World
The inauguration will celebrate the completion of the Sagrada Familia Jesus Tower. This is the central and tallest pinnacle of Gaudí’s masterpiece. Construction is proceeding according to schedule. The installation of the sixth and final arm of the great cross is expected in mid-February.
This massive terminal cross will stand 17 metres tall. That is equivalent to a five-storey building. It will span 13.5 metres in width. Each arm of the cross weighs approximately 12.8 tonnes and is clad in glass and white glazed ceramic. Once the final piece is in place, the basilica will reach its maximum height of 172.5 metres.
Martínez recalled that Gaudí, a devout man, specifically designed the temple not to exceed the height of Montjuïc mountain (177 metres). He believed that the work of man should not surpass the work of God.
Centenary Celebrations for Gaudí
The prospective papal visit would be the highlight of a year dedicated to Antoni Gaudí. The architect died on 10 June 1926, three days after being struck by a tram in Barcelona. To commemorate 100 years since his passing, the Sagrada Familia has organised numerous events. These include talks, concerts, and exhibitions aimed at highlighting his legacy.
If the visit proceeds, it will be the first time a Pope has visited the basilica since Benedict XVI consecrated the temple in November 2010. “It was a very important event for the Sagrada Familia and I hope that can be repeated on June 10, 2026,” said Martínez.
The timing also coincides with Barcelona’s designation as the UNESCO World Capital of Architecture for 2026. With the city hosting major international congresses and the basilica welcoming nearly 5 million annual visitors, officials believe the completion of the central tower will place the Sagrada Familia firmly at the centre of global attention this year.
