Sagrada Familia tower construction enters its final phase as Barcelona prepares for the 2026 centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death.

The tower’s immense cross, standing 29 metres tall, represents the final major vertical element. Furthermore, its ceramic cladding comes from Granollers, while Barcelona-based Cricursa supplies the glass. Consequently, this final assembly involves over 130 specialists working in precise weather windows.

When finished, the Sagrada Familia tower will reach 172.5 metres, making it the world’s tallest church. However, Gaudí deliberately designed it to be slightly shorter than Montjuïc hill. The architect reportedly refused to surpass “a work created by God.”
The construction crane itself is a marvel, with a 203-metre arm anchored 54 metres up on the central nave. Moreover, this equipment will remain for connecting the Jesus and Mary towers and working on the Glory Façade. The project’s scale continues to amaze, even after 143 years of construction.
Meanwhile, the city council is redeveloping surrounding public spaces to handle visitor numbers. The temple attracts nearly five million paying visitors annually, with total footfall approaching 18 million.
Additionally, the Junta Constructora has purchased adjacent properties on Mallorca Street. This strategic move could facilitate the controversial Glory Façade staircase, should negotiations with the council require building replacements. The council maintains that any expropriation costs must be borne by the temple foundation.
