This significant development marks the beginning of the final construction phase for the basilica’s central tower, according to official announcements.
The newly placed component represents the lower arm of the cross, standing at an impressive 7.25 metres tall and weighing 24 tonnes. Furthermore, the piece arrived last July divided into four panels that were carefully positioned on a working platform above the central nave at 54 metres height. Consequently, assembly teams have been working diligently on joining sections, installing glass elements, and completing interior works alongside stone placement.

Sagrada Familia Construction Advances With Technical Precision
The lower cross arm features a sophisticated double-twist geometry that transforms from square at the base to octagonal at the top. Additionally, the exterior showcases white glazed ceramic and glass materials specifically chosen for their luminosity and weather resistance. These materials will ensure the cross remains visually striking while withstanding Barcelona’s varied climate conditions for generations to come.
When fully assembled, the cross will reach 17.5 metres in height – equivalent to a five-storey building – with a width of 13.5 metres. This installation represents a crucial step toward completing the central tower, which will ultimately become the highest point of the basilica. Meanwhile, Barcelona continues to evolve as a cultural destination, with traditional celebrations maintaining the city’s rich heritage alongside modern architectural achievements.
The construction milestone comes as Barcelona addresses various urban challenges while celebrating its architectural treasures. The Sagrada Familia’s progress demonstrates ongoing commitment to completing Antoni Gaudí’s visionary masterpiece, which has become synonymous with Barcelona’s identity worldwide.
Construction teams will now focus on completing the remaining cross elements and finalising the tower structure. This historic installation brings the iconic basilica closer to its long-awaited completion, cementing its status as one of the world’s most remarkable architectural achievements. The Sagrada Familia construction continues to capture global attention as it approaches its final form.
