President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has publicly reaffirmed his "full confidence" in his chief of staff, Eduard Rivas, who is currently under investigation. The inquiry relates to municipal contracts awarded during Mr Rivas's tenure as mayor of Esparreguera.

Speaking in an interview with Onda Cero, Mr Illa stated his belief that the case will resolve favourably. He assured listeners that "he is a person I know well."

Mr Illa also emphasised the Generalitat's "very strict" standards for its code of conduct, while also applying criteria of justice. "At this moment, I have full confidence in him," Mr Illa guaranteed, adding, "If I had evidence, I would act with the force appropriate in such cases."

Mr Rivas faces an investigation concerning contracts from his time as mayor of Esparreguera, a municipality in the Baix Llobregat comarca, home to approximately 22,000 residents. The Generalitat President noted Mr Rivas maintains a correct attitude of collaboration with justice. Mr Illa explained that Mr Rivas informed him about the case and his actions a few weeks ago.

Illa Defends Transparency

The President defended his position, stating he has not concealed any information because the investigation remains "secret." This situation highlights the scrutiny faced by high-ranking officials in Catalan politics, particularly concerning past public service roles. The Generalitat, the autonomous government of Catalonia, operates under strict ethical guidelines for its staff.

The outcome of the investigation into Eduard Rivas will be closely monitored, as it could impact the political landscape within the Generalitat. Further developments are expected as the legal process continues.
