On Tuesday evening, the incident unfolded on Passeig de Torres i Bages, in the vibrant Sant Andreu neighbourhood. At approximately 8:00 PM, the 112 emergency services received a call from a man reporting that he had injured another individual with a bladed weapon at a residence.
Emergency Response and Arrest
Responding swiftly to the call, officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police force, and paramedics from the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) arrived at the scene. Medical personnel immediately began efforts to stabilise the victim before transporting him to a local hospital in critical condition. Tragically, the man succumbed to his injuries and died on Wednesday.
After the incident, the Mossos d’Esquadra launched a formal investigation, arresting the 20-year-old suspect on Wednesday. He remains held without bail as the investigation continues. Reports indicate the suspect himself contacted emergency services to report the stabbing.
The Tribunal Superior de Justícia de Catalunya (TSJC) confirmed the pre-trial detention order via a message on ‘X’. It stated that the case is officially open and authorities are treating it as a homicide investigation, according to Europa Press.
Investigation Underway
Details surrounding the incident remain limited; however, reports suggest the fatal stabbing occurred after an argument between the young man and his stepfather. The Mossos d’Esquadra‘s Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) leads the ongoing investigation.
The case is now proceeding through the courts; the suspect faces serious charges related to the death. Further details will likely emerge as the investigation progresses. Neither the Ajuntament de Barcelona (Barcelona City Council) nor the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) have issued statements regarding the ongoing investigation or court proceedings.
Recent Parricide Cases in Barcelona
This Sant Andreu incident follows two other parricide cases reported by betevé in the Barcelona area recently. For instance, authorities arrested a 49-year-old man late last year for allegedly attempting to kill his father before trying to commit suicide by jumping onto the metro tracks. This incident significantly disrupted the metro system, suspending services between Universitat and Glòries for an hour. More recently, a man was arrested in Sabadell in January for allegedly killing his father during an early-morning altercation.
The rise in these incidents concerns the community. Local authorities urge anyone with information to assist police with their investigations.
