The Barcelona City Council has granted initial approval for a significant Sant Andreu street remodelling project. Consequently, the Government Commission has authorised the transformation of Carrer de Sant Adrià and Carrer d’Otger. The aim is to create single-platform zones that prioritise pedestrian movement over vehicular traffic.
This Sant Andreu street remodelling initiative seeks to consolidate a civic axis. Therefore, it will link the historic Fabra i Coats site with the Can Fabra library. By removing architectural barriers and introducing new greenery, the council aims to create a cohesive public space. This space will connect these key cultural hubs effectively.

Sant Andreu Street Remodelling: Timeline and Investment
According to a council statement released on Sunday, construction will commence in the third quarter of 2026. The Sant Andreu street remodelling project carries a €3.5 million budget. Furthermore, it is expected to take approximately 15 months to complete.
Traffic Restrictions and New Layouts
The redesign will strictly limit vehicle access on Carrer de Sant Adrià. This thoroughfare had already been closed to general traffic for several years. The closure was due to the provisional Sant Andreu Market tent. Under the new plan, access will be permanently restricted to residents and essential services only.
Specific improvements for Carrer de Sant Adrià include new flower beds and modern street furniture. These additions will enhance the streetscape significantly.
Simultaneously, works on Carrer d’Otger will focus on integrating the road with the adjacent Jardinets de Can Fabra. This will involve removing the existing staircase and slope. As a result, it will create a seamless, accessible transition between the street and the green space.
A Greener District
Marta Villanueva, the district councillor for Sant Andreu, highlighted the community focus. She stated the reform is designed to create a link that is “more friendly, green, and accessible.” This Sant Andreu street remodelling project follows another major urban regeneration plan. The Barcelona City Council approved that plan previously.
