Barcelona City Council has given initial approval to a significant Sant Andreu street remodelling project in the district. The plan involves the comprehensive remodelling of Carrer de Sant Adrià and Carrer d’Otger. Consequently, it aims to transform them into single-platform zones that prioritise pedestrians over vehicular traffic.

This initiative aims to consolidate a civic axis connecting two major cultural landmarks: the Fabra i Coats site and the Can Fabra library. By eliminating architectural barriers and introducing new greenery, the council intends to create a more cohesive and accessible public space. Therefore, the Sant Andreu street remodelling will enhance community connectivity.

Scope and Timeline for the Sant Andreu Street Remodelling

According to a council statement, the project carries a €3.5 million budget. Construction is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2026. Works should last approximately 15 months.

Marta Villanueva, the district councillor for Sant Andreu, described the reforms as a move to create a link that is “friendlier, greener, and accessible.”

Traffic Restrictions and Design Details

A key component of the Sant Andreu street remodelling is restricting vehicle access on Carrer de Sant Adrià. The street, previously closed to general traffic for several years, will now permanently limit access to residents and essential services only.

The design for Sant Adrià includes new planters and updated street furniture to encourage community use. Meanwhile, works on Carrer d’Otger focus on accessibility and integration. The current sloped staircase will be removed. This allows the street to blend seamlessly with the Jardinets de Can Fabra (Can Fabra Gardens). This project is just another major urban regeneration plan approved by Barcelona City Council.
