The Barcelona City Council has given initial approval to a comprehensive Sant Andreu street revamp. This initiative will transform the heart of the Sant Andreu district. Consequently, Carrer de Sant Adrià and Carrer d’Otger will be remodelled into single-platform zones, prioritising pedestrians over vehicular traffic.

Announced by the Government Commission on Sunday, the primary goal is to consolidate a civic axis. Therefore, this new corridor will seamlessly connect the Fabra i Coats enclosure with the Can Fabra library. Moreover, it will remove architectural barriers and introduce new green spaces for residents.

Sant Andreu Street Revamp Connects Cultural Hubs

The project focuses on creating a “more friendly, green, and accessible” link between key cultural points. District Councillor Marta Villanueva confirmed this objective.

Specific improvements for each street include:

  • Carrer de Sant Adrià: This street has been closed to general traffic for years due to the temporary Sant Andreu Market tent. Now, it will permanently restrict vehicle access to residents and essential services only. In addition, the design includes new flower beds and modern street furniture to encourage social use.
  • Carrer d’Otger: The works will integrate the road directly with the Jardinets de Can Fabra (Can Fabra Gardens). Significantly, the current steep staircase will be removed to improve accessibility.

Sant Andreu Street Revamp Timeline and Investment

The City Council has allocated a budget of €3.5 million for the regeneration effort. Construction is currently scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026.

Residents should expect the works to continue for approximately 15 months. Once completed, the area will feature a “single platform” design. This curbless paving emphasises pedestrian movement and accessibility. Furthermore, it solidifies the district’s shift towards a greener, calmer urban environment. This Sant Andreu street revamp joins another major urban regeneration plan in the Sants-Montjuïc district. Therefore, it highlights Barcelona’s commitment to improving urban spaces.
