Sant Cugat del Vallès now has a new bike lane section that safely connects the town with Rubí. The council, working with Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), recently opened a 630-metre segment completing the third and final phase of the Carretera de Rubí project. The new infrastructure, which cost 945,871 euros, links Països Catalans avenue with Plaça dels Carreters and allows cyclists to ride the 1.8 kilometres of this road between Rius i Taulet avenue and Sant Cugat shopping centre.

AMB’s Sustainable Mobility councillor Elisabet Latorre and Sant Cugat mayor Josep Maria Vallès presided over the inauguration. Latorre highlighted that the connection “facilitates active mobility between Sant Cugat and Rubí”, noting that over 380,000 daily journeys happen between both municipalities, most under 10 kilometres. “An indicator of the enormous potential of bikes as an alternative to cars,” she said.
Meanwhile, Vallès stressed that the new lane “improves a strategic connection with infrastructure designed for daily commutes, safer and more accessible for all citizens”, calling it an example of how to “add sustainability, functionality and quality of life” to urban design. The route runs parallel to Carretera de Rubí and connects with other existing bike lane sections, including the one linking to the neighbouring municipality through Can Sant Joan industrial estate.
It also incorporates accessible zones for pedestrians, allowing the space to be shared between walkers and cyclists. The work prioritised environmental criteria, with the creation of a green corridor acting as a natural gutter to drain rainwater. They’ve planted 12,000 shrubs from 12 different species adapted to water scarcity, plus over 70 trees including holm oaks, stone pines and acacias. The pavement uses tinted concrete and 35 new LED lighting points have been installed.
The new section forms part of Bicivia, the metropolitan cycling network seeking to weave the territory together through safe cycling routes. With this work, the network has reached 67% completion: 367 of the 551 kilometres planned by AMB in collaboration with metropolitan area municipalities.
