Sant Cugat’s council has cancelled 322 fraudulent municipal registrations discovered this summer. The **false registrations** scandal involved organised groups targeting the Barcelona-area municipality. Authorities detected suspicious patterns during August when 324 registrations appeared within three weeks. Most applicants came from India and Pakistan accompanied by translators.

Organised Fraud Operation Uncovered
Council inspectors noticed identical methods across all applications. Groups of four or five people arrived with rental contracts for local properties. Moreover, they always brought translators following the same procedure. Consequently, officials froze all pending applications on August 18th.
Additionally, home visits confirmed none of the 322 individuals actually lived there. Inspectors found repeated address patterns and similar documentation. Therefore, they concluded an organised network operated these **false registrations**. The Spanish registration law requires genuine residence proof.
Administrative Actions and New Measures
Meanwhile, six cases received immediate cancellation after cross-checks showed other municipal registrations. The remaining 316 cases now face administrative removal procedures. Mayor Josep Maria Vallès emphasised zero tolerance towards registration fraud.
Furthermore, Sant Cugat develops new protocols to prevent future incidents. These include enhanced residence verification before processing applications. The council also plans direct inspections for suspicious cases. They’ll maintain internal records to detect repeated addresses or intermediaries. This follows previous registration clean-ups removing 4,000 irregular entries.
The council’s swift action demonstrates their commitment to registration integrity. New verification measures should prevent similar organised fraud attempts. Sant Cugat residents can expect stricter registration checks moving forward.
