On the night, the prestigious Teatre-Auditori Emma Vilarasau will stage ‘La brama del cérvol’ (The Stag’s Bellow) at 8 PM. Tickets for the show are already close to selling out, demonstrating strong local enthusiasm for the campaign, as Cugat.cat reports. Located in the affluent municipality of Sant Cugat del Vallès, the venue serves as a key cultural hub in the Barcelona metropolitan area.
A Region-Wide Cultural Showcase
‘Cap Butaca Buida’ has rapidly grown into a cornerstone event for the Catalan cultural calendar. Timed to coincide with World Theatre Week, it aims to mobilise both the public and the arts sector. The 2026 edition, its most ambitious yet, unites a vast network of venues in a shared mission. Barna.News has previously reported that the ‘No Empty Seat’ initiative will unite 248 theatres for this one-day arts push.
In total, the event will feature 288 different shows with 324 scheduled performances, offering over 90,000 seats to the public. The campaign showcases the collaborative strength of Catalonia’s performing arts community, with strong participation from theatres in Barcelona, Girona, Tarragona, and Lleida. Prominent organisations, including the Association of Theatre Companies of Catalonia (ADETCA), the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, and the Barcelona City Council, back the event.
Expanding Horizons
The initiative’s success has spread its influence far beyond Catalonia’s borders. For its third edition, ‘Cap Butaca Buida’ will also feature theatres in the Valencian Community, Mallorca, and Andorra. Furthermore, to demonstrate its growing international appeal, events are also planned in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and L’Alguer in Sardinia, Italy.
This expansion transforms a regional celebration into a global statement on live theatre’s vitality and importance. It highlights a shared cultural identity, fostering solidarity among artists and audiences across territories. The diverse programme, from local productions in towns like Sant Cugat to major shows in Barcelona’s grand venues like the Gran Teatre del Liceu, showcases the region’s rich performing arts tapestry.
The ultimate objective is to firmly establish March 21 as the ‘Diada del Teatre’ (Theatre Day), encouraging audiences to show support and the industry to display its collective strength and creativity. With venues like the Teatre-Auditori Sant Cugat nearing a full house well in advance, the 2026 edition is poised to be the most successful yet.
