Sant Jordi Bookstore reopens this Wednesday as a beacon of community spirit on Barcelona’s tourist-heavy Ferran Street.
The historic shop, which faced closure after its owner’s death last year, has been rescued by local entrepreneur Rafa Serra and transformed into a multifaceted cultural space featuring second-hand books, a Catalan-focused catalogue, a small restaurant, and a dedicated events programme.

Consequently, Serra, who previously saved the historic mountaineering bookstore Quera in 2019, stepped in with a comprehensive vision.
“My intention wasn’t to make money, but to make it sustainable and maintain a historic local business,” Serra explained from the shop, where final preparations were underway. The project’s viability was secured through cooperation with the building’s owners, who agreed to adjust the rent accordingly.
A New Chapter for Community and Culture
The transformed Sant Jordi Bookstore carefully preserves its original 19th-century wooden furniture and bookshop character, which holds four types of official heritage protection. However, the significant change occurs in the back room, where a compact kitchen and restaurant seating for about ten people have been installed.
Managed by the team behind Bodega La Palma, the restaurant will serve simple Catalan cuisine with an average ticket of around €25. Meanwhile, the cultural agenda aims to establish the space as a meeting point for neighbours through book presentations, discussions, and literary dinners. The reopening will be inaugurated by writers Carlota Gurt and Jaume Clotet.
