The suspect reportedly approached victims on a stolen motorbike, snatched their phones, and then fled at high speed. Police stated on Thursday that he commonly wore a helmet and black jacket to avoid identification. The operation to apprehend him began with surveillance of the stolen motorbike. However, a victim’s report proved crucial; her phone remained switched on after the theft.

Geolocation Leads to Arrest

The geolocation of the active device allowed officers to pinpoint the suspect’s location in a specific part of the La Verneda neighbourhood. There, officers intercepted and detained him, according to Official Mossos d’Esquadra website. At the time of his arrest, police recovered five mobile phones and the stolen motorbike used in the robberies.

Suspect’s Extensive Criminal History

The arrested individual has an extensive criminal record, accumulating over eight previous police records. These include offences for violent robbery, intimidation, damage, and vehicle theft. The Sant Martí district, home to over 240,000 residents, has seen ongoing efforts to combat street crime. This arrest highlights the persistent challenge of mobile phone theft in urban areas like Barcelona, affecting both residents and tourists.

Authorities have now handed the suspect over to judicial authorities. He faces charges related to the mobile phone robberies and the use of a stolen vehicle.
