La Nova Farga, a neighbourhood institution in Barcelona’s Sants district, faces an unexpected €8,200 debt to the tax authorities that threatens to shutter the business after 12 years of operation.

The bar’s owner, Ramon Puñet, discovered the financial crisis this summer and immediately launched a crowdfunding campaign under the slogan “Salvemos La Nova Farga.” Consequently, the initiative has already raised €5,142 through contributions from loyal customers and local residents who value the establishment’s unique character.

Sants Bar Faces Pandemic Aid Repayment Demand

According to the crowdfunding page, the debt stems from being required to repay financial aid received during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We need help to avoid closing the business,” the team explains. “They’ve made us return the Covid-19 aid without prior notice and with surcharges.”

During the health crisis, La Nova Farga suffered like many other hospitality venues under restrictions. Nevertheless, they managed to survive what they describe as emerging “touched, but not sunk” from the challenging period. The sudden demand to repay support has now delivered a potentially fatal blow to the business.

This situation reflects broader challenges facing Barcelona’s hospitality sector, where local businesses continue struggling with pandemic aftermath. Furthermore, the bar’s distinctive personality makes it particularly valued within the Sants community.

La Nova Farga is renowned for its witty daily menu board messages that reflect the humour and warmth of owner Ramon Puñet and chef Pere Cardona. “We’re a neighbourhood bar and we want to continue sharing conversations, smiles and good moments,” they emphasise in their campaign appeal.

The establishment offers various rewards for contributors, including solidarity vouchers, locally designed t-shirts, special menus created by Cardona, and VIP packages featuring meals, merchandise and celebration access. Additionally, any funds exceeding the target will be invested in improving the venue.

The community response demonstrates how valued local businesses contribute to neighbourhood identity beyond mere commerce. Therefore, the campaign represents not just financial support but collective determination to preserve what makes Sants distinctive.
