Barcelona has unveiled its first real traffic map dedicated to bicycles and scooters, developed through a collaboration between scientists, universities and cycling associations. The project aims to bring precision to urban planning by showing street-by-street usage levels across the city.

The initiative combines data from automatic counters, volunteer observations, and cycling associations to track the daily flows of bikes and scooters. It highlights well-used corridors such as Passeig de Sant Joan, Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer d’Aragó, while also revealing gaps in connections to the city’s outskirts. Men make up 70 per cent of riders recorded, with women representing 29.5 per cent, reflecting ongoing concerns about safety and inclusivity.

The map is designed to serve as a practical tool for city planners and policymakers, allowing them to see which streets are most used and where infrastructure improvements are needed. With Barcelona positioning itself as a leader in sustainable mobility, this project could play a pivotal role in reducing accidents, improving connectivity and encouraging more residents to adopt cycling as a daily mode of transport.
