Mossos d'Esquadra are investigating a fire that destroyed seven cars beneath the C-31 bridge in Sant Adrià de Besòs early on Friday, 17 April. One van was completely burned out, whilst six other vehicles sustained varying degrees of damage.
The fire broke out at 00:45 near the bridge at number 501, Avinguda de les Corts Catalanes. Two fire crews from the Generalitat's fire service attended and extinguished the flames rapidly.
A local resident told El Caso that they heard noises resembling "fireworks or gunshots" that intensified over several minutes. Flames spread quickly between parked vehicles, and heavy smoke accumulated beneath the bridge before firefighters arrived.
Extent of Damage
Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters assessed the damage. The van suffered the most severe destruction, burned completely. Of the six cars, one had its front section burned, another suffered engine damage, and the remaining four sustained lateral burns.
Mossos d'Esquadra's Investigation Unit is now determining the cause. Investigators are not ruling out any hypothesis at this stage. The fire could have been caused by arson, or alternatively, it may relate to another crime, such as vehicle theft; criminals sometimes burn stolen cars to destroy evidence after committing a robbery.
Investigation Underway
No arrests have been made, and the circumstances remain under active investigation. The Mossos have not released further details about suspected motives or persons of interest.
