Severe Barcelona windstorm prompts thousands of emergency interventions
The severe Barcelona windstorm caused significant disruption. Therefore, municipal services worked at full capacity. By 6:00 pm on Thursday, emergency teams had managed nearly 2,000 separate incidents:
- Barcelona Firefighters (Bombers): Over 900 interventions.
- Guardia Urbana (Urban Guard): More than 700 incidents attended.
- Parks and Gardens Services: Approximately 350 incidents involving trees and green spaces.
According to the Mayor, roughly half of the incidents handled by the Parks and Gardens teams had been resolved by the evening update.
Critical injuries reported after severe Barcelona windstorm
Mayor Collboni provided details regarding the most serious casualties. One woman is in critical condition following an incident at a company in the Bon Pastor industrial estate. Another individual suffered serious injuries in the Prosperitat neighbourhood. Both were transferred to Vall d’Hebron Hospital for urgent treatment.
Of the remaining injured, eight sustained less serious injuries. One person was treated for minor injuries.
De-escalation and safety warnings following the windstorm
Despite the injuries, Mayor Collboni defended the proactive steps taken by authorities. He stated that measures implemented by both the Government and the City Council “have been effective.” He thanked the public for their cooperation. However, he urged continued caution as the city returns to normal.
Most emergency restrictions were set to be lifted from 8:00 pm on Thursday. At that time, suspended services such as the Bicing public bicycle scheme were scheduled to resume operation.
However, certain facilities will remain closed until Friday morning for safety inspections. These include:
- Public parks and gardens
- Municipal schools
- Outdoor sports facilities
Collboni warned that the physical aftermath of the severe Barcelona windstorm poses lingering risks. “There are still fallen trees, many fallen motorcycles and bicycles, and moved containers that our services are fixing in real-time,” he said.
He added a specific warning regarding buildings. He noted that facades and roofs may have been weakened by the gusts. “Therefore, although from 8:00 pm we begin the de-escalation, we call for prudence and caution in the coming hours,” the Mayor concluded.
