Severe windstorm conditions have battered Catalonia with devastating consequences, leaving eleven people injured, one swimmer drowned, and forcing emergency evacuations across the region.

According to El País reports, the powerful gusts exceeding 80 kilometres per hour have generated nearly 1,000 emergency calls since early Thursday morning.
The Generalitat Fire Service has responded to 649 incidents, primarily in the northern metropolitan area. Furthermore, fallen trees, displaced urban furniture, and building facade damage have created hazardous conditions throughout Barcelona and surrounding municipalities. The Medical Emergency System has treated 26 people affected by storm-related incidents, with eleven requiring hospital transport for various injuries.
Severe Windstorm Disrupts Transport and Education
Two schools in Anglesola and Tàrrega faced emergency evacuations due to structural damage from the severe windstorm. In Anglesola, a nearby pavilion roof tore loose and landed on the Santa Creu school building, while the Vedruna school in Tàrrega emptied as elements from a neighbouring warehouse roof began collapsing.
Transport networks suffered significant disruption. Consequently, the R12 commuter line suspended service between Manresa and Calaf after a tree fell on overhead cables, trapping a train that required towing to safety. Additionally, a large plastic awning blown onto tracks halted R-1 service between El Clot and Sant Adrià de Besòs.
Meanwhile, Barcelona’s ongoing infrastructure projects face additional challenges following this severe weather event. Power outages affected 3,640 subscribers in Sant Vicenç dels Horts and Vallirana after wind damage to electrical infrastructure.
Road closures occurred at multiple locations including the C-16 in Vacarisses, B-23 in Esplugues de Llobregat, AP-7 in Barberà del Vallès, and N-420 in Pradell de la Teixeta. The severe windstorm also generated dangerous coastal conditions, with one fatality occurring when a man drowned amid powerful waves at Cala de la Roca Plana in Tarragona.
Meteorological data recorded peak gusts of 83.5 km/h in La Panadella, 84.6 km/h in Montserrat, and 75.2 km/h in El Garraf Natural Park. Civil Protection maintains the Ventcat emergency plan activation, though forecasts indicate diminishing wind intensity as evening approaches.
Barcelona authorities have closed all city parks and gardens to prevent accidents from falling trees and urban furniture. The severe windstorm response continues as emergency services work to restore normalcy across the region.
