Sexual assaults on prison staff in Catalonia reached alarming levels in 2025. According to union data, 114 recorded incidents occurred throughout the year. The Marea Blava union released these figures, highlighting a significant escalation in violence faced by workers within the region’s penitentiary system.
This report acts as a barometer for workplace safety in Catalan prisons. It details a broad spectrum of sexually motivated aggression. These incidents range from physical sexual violence and unwanted contact to exhibitionism, verbal sexual violence, and sexist behaviours targeted at employees.

Sexual Assaults on Prison Staff: A Broader Trend of Aggression
The 114 sexual assaults form part of a wider landscape of hostility within the facilities. In total, the union reported 699 aggressions against prison workers in 2025. This aggregate figure includes physical assaults and other forms of coercion, painting a stark picture of the daily risks involved in prison management. This environment is further complicated by the high concentration of repeat offenders in the Catalan prison system, which contributes to ongoing tensions.
The data suggests that the severity of these incidents varies. However, the volume of reports indicates a systemic issue regarding staff safety and inmate management protocols. This situation inside prisons reflects the rising threats faced by Catalan law enforcement in general.
Sexual Assaults on Prison Staff: High-Risk Facilities Identified
The distribution of these violent episodes is not uniform across the region. According to the data, the Brians 1 and Brians 2 penitentiary centres account for more than half of all reported aggressions against officials. These major facilities, located in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, appear to be the epicentres of the current unrest.
Other facilities have also reported significant numbers. For instance, the prison in Tarragona registered 43 aggressions against workers in 2025. Four of these were classified as severe.
Union Response to Sexual Assaults on Prison Staff
Marea Blava has published these findings to draw attention to deteriorating working conditions for prison officers. By categorising the specific nature of the attacks—particularly the rise in sexual violence—the union aims to push for robust measures to protect staff. Female officers are often the primary targets of sexualised aggression. The union’s call for action comes as authorities contend with evolving criminal networks in Catalonia, which can influence correctional facility dynamics.
