Barcelona has seen a sharp rise in sexual offences connected to gender-based violence, with complaints climbing from 534 in 2023 to 742 in 2024—a 38.95% increase—according to the Provincial Prosecutor’s annual report for 2024. The figures, drawn from specialised courts dealing with violence against women, paint a troubling picture of persistent and escalating abuse across the city and its surrounding districts.

The same report details broader pressures on the system. Proceedings for domestic abuse (‘malos tratos’) reached 7,539 last year, up from 6,068 in 2023, while cases involving bodily harm rose to 6,782 from 6,166. Violence deemed ‘habitual’ also increased, with 518 proceedings compared with 485 the previous year. The trend extends to related offences: threats led to 2,013 proceedings (1,830 in 2022), coercion to 601 (562 in 2023), and breaches of restraining orders or other measures to 1,933 (1,758 in 2023). Stalking cases climbed to 391 (356 in 2023), and unlawful disclosure of secrets rose to 149 (136 in 2023).

Beyond the caseload, the human toll is stark. In 2024, the Barcelona area recorded seven violent deaths and 12 attempted killings tied to the same sphere of violence. Prosecutors say the data reflect both heightened reporting and enduring patterns of abuse that remain difficult to break without sustained prevention, swift protection measures and consistent enforcement.

Why it matters: the acceleration of complaints—particularly in sexual offences—suggests survivors are either more willing to report or facing more incidents, or a mix of both. For policymakers and frontline services, the numbers underscore the need for resources across the pipeline: from early reporting and victim support to court throughput and offender management. For Barcelona’s justice system, the steady rise across multiple offence categories points to sustained pressure that will likely continue unless prevention and protection measures scale accordingly.

Conclusion: Barcelona’s latest prosecution data show an intensifying challenge, not an anomaly. Officials will need to pair enforcement with robust victim services and prevention to arrest the trajectory outlined in the 2024 figures.
