Barcelona will mark the closing day of its Festa Major, La Mercè, on Tuesday 24 September, with concerts and street activities filling the city. As always, the celebration also affects shopping, with many shops and shopping centres closed for the holiday.

The city’s major malls, including Gran Via 2, L’Illa, Maremàgnum, Splau, Westfield Glòries and Westfield La Maquinista, will remain shut in line with regulations that do not permit festive opening on 24 September. Likewise, well-known chains such as IKEA, FNAC, El Corte Inglés, MediaMarkt and Primark will also close their doors in Barcelona.

However, supermarkets such as Carrefour Express, Supercor and DÍA have confirmed that they will open on the day, while Mercadona, Aldi and Lidl will remain closed. Shoppers are advised to check the official websites of their preferred stores before setting out.

Although Barcelona itself will largely shut down for retail activity, nearby municipalities such as Badalona, Cornellà de Llobregat and Sant Cugat del Vallès will see normal commercial opening hours. This means that those in need of urgent shopping can travel a short distance outside the city to access services.

The 24 September holiday is expected to draw large crowds to concerts, performances and family events across the capital, bringing La Mercè festivities to a close with a vibrant final day.
