Around 200 people marched through Barcelona this Saturday to demand improved working conditions for social workers. Under the slogan ‘Acabemos con el juego de la precariedad’ (‘Let’s end the game of precariousness’), protesters highlighted low wages, outsourcing and a lack of professional recognition.

The demonstration was part of a nationwide action called by the Plataforma de Profesionales del Sector Social. In Barcelona, the march began at 11.30 am outside the Sagrada Família and drew support from the Catalan Association of Social Educators (CEESC), Acció Social Catalunya and other organisations.

Participants called for higher salaries, proper categorisation of roles and the end of what they described as the ‘deterioration’ caused by externalisation of services. Their manifesto also urged governments to acknowledge the essential role played by social workers in supporting vulnerable communities, particularly at a time of mounting social and economic pressure.

Organisers stressed that the protest was not just about pay, but about securing dignity and recognition for a sector that underpins the welfare state.
