According to official statements, authorities are currently finalising specific dates for necessary service interruptions. However, the minister emphasised that efforts are underway to minimise disruption to existing rail services during the upgrade process.
The Mediterranean corridor has seen substantial investment since 2018, with €8.327 billion worth of projects tendered and €5.389 billion already executed. Consequently, this represents one of Spain’s most significant infrastructure commitments in recent years.
Catalonia’s Rail Transformation Accelerates
Specific to Catalonia, the ministry has tendered new works valued at €916.8 million while awarding contracts worth €817 million. Additionally, works exceeding €1.397 billion are currently under execution across the region.
Among these projects, the Sagrera station development stands out with a €1 billion investment. This major transport hub will eventually connect high-speed services with local trains, metro lines and bus services. Meanwhile, the government is also planning viability studies for improving Barcelona’s broader rail connectivity.
These developments come alongside broader infrastructure challenges in the region. Recent reports indicate that Barcelona construction activity has declined significantly from previous peaks, making this rail investment particularly noteworthy.
