The Spanish government has announced a new national Spain public transport pass priced at €60 per month. This initiative aims to simplify travel on state-run services. The pass offers a reduced €30 rate for individuals under 26. It goes on sale from Monday, 12 January, and becomes valid for travel from 19 January.

The Council of Ministers confirmed the measure, formalising it in a Royal Decree-law. This legislation also extends existing public transport subsidies throughout 2026. Therefore, the move represents a significant investment. It encourages public transport use and reduces living costs for millions. Full scheme details are published in the Official State Gazette.

What Does the Spain Public Transport Pass Cover?

The new single pass is intended for interurban travel across the country. It grants unlimited access to all Cercanías (commuter rail) networks. Additionally, it covers Media Distancia (medium-distance rail) services and the national state bus network.

However, the pass does not currently include local city transport. Urban metro systems, local buses, and tram services are excluded. Consequently, commuters still need a separate ticket for travel within towns and cities. Transport Minister Óscar Puente described the launch as “only the first step.” The long-term goal is incorporating all urban and local transport into a single pass. This distinction is important as cities continue their own improvements. For example, a major investment in new Barcelona metro trains is underway.

How the Spain Public Transport Pass Affects Other Discounts

Alongside the new pass, the government has extended its existing programme of transport discounts for 2026. These subsidies have been in place since 2022. They have reportedly increased public transport usage by 23%. Moreover, they saved rail users an estimated €1.5 billion. This national trend is reflected locally. For instance, Barcelona’s public transport authority recently reported record 700 million passenger validations in 2025.

Key measures being extended include:

  • Free travel for children under 14 on many services.
  • 50% discounts for young people up to the age of 26.
  • A continued 20% subsidy on other regional passes. The central government will now fund this regardless of whether autonomous communities contribute an additional 20%.

A ‘Historic’ Investment to Boost Public Transport

The combination of the new pass and extended subsidies will cost the state €1.371 billion this year. This is part of a “historic, sustained budgetary effort.” Since 2018, over €9.29 billion has been allocated to transport subsidies. According to government figures, more than 14 million free or discounted passes have been issued since 2022. These national efforts are complemented by significant local projects. For example, the €16.6 million accessibility upgrade at Sants station is one such project.

Furthermore, the ministry announced two new schemes to reward frequent travellers. The ‘Pase Vía’ and ‘Sistema Cronos’ will offer progressively larger discounts. These are based on the number of journeys taken. Therefore, they reward regular commuters without requiring an upfront payment for a pass.
