Sustainable microchips are set to transform Barcelona’s technology landscape following a major government investment.
The Spanish government has announced a €9.5 million investment in Viladecans-based company Ideaded through the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT).

This strategic move aims to position Spain among pioneering nations developing next-generation semiconductor technology.
Sustainable Microchips Production Timeline
The investment will enable Ideaded to acquire new machinery and complete its pilot plant in Viladecans. Consequently, the company aims to achieve production capacity of 50 wafers per month. These semiconductor silicon wafers form the foundation for creating environmentally friendly microchips. Furthermore, the first fully manufactured wafer from the Viladecans pilot plant is expected in the second half of 2026, with production approaching target levels by 2027.
Government representatives have highlighted Ideaded’s innovative approach to manufacturing. The company utilises new materials and efficient processes, positioning itself as a pioneer in “beyond silicon” technologies. These advancements surpass current silicon capabilities while maintaining environmental sustainability.
Carlos Prieto, the government delegate in Catalonia, emphasised this investment represents another step in the executive’s commitment to Spain’s digital and technological transformation. He described it as “a strategic investment” that strengthens Catalonia’s role in the new economic model based on innovation, technology, and growth.
Meanwhile, Javier Ponce, director of SETT, confirmed the government’s support will enable Ideaded to use its disruptive technology for mass semiconductor production in the future. This investment forms part of the PERTE Chip programme, designed to reinforce national industrial and technological leadership.
Eduard Puig, CEO of Ideaded, expressed excitement about this new development phase. He noted it brings technology closer to market and demonstrates Spain’s capability to develop microelectronics solutions. The Catalan company, founded in Girona in 2015, currently operates from Viladecans.
Since May 2025, Ideaded has operated machinery capable of producing 300 million RFID antennas annually. These antennas, used for real-time product tracking and inventory management, will be manufactured using unprecedented sector materials and processes that are 300% more efficient and sustainable than existing alternatives.
In a global context with over 500 silicon-based semiconductor factories and fewer than twenty using alternative materials, according to government statements, Ideaded positions Spain among countries pioneering sustainable microchip development. This technological field represents a crucial element for the future of global industry, making these sustainable microchips a significant advancement for both Barcelona and Spain’s technological standing.
