Officers from the Guardia Urbana in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat have rescued six Sphynx cats from a squalid flat. The property was repulsive and completely filled with animal excrement. The animals, found with little food and no water, were removed on Wednesday afternoon. This action followed complaints from concerned neighbours.

A grim discovery in Santa Eulalia

The intervention took place on Wednesday, 4 February, at a block of flats on Calle Doctor Fleming in the Santa Eulalia neighbourhood. Residents had contacted authorities to report an unbearable stench. They feared for the welfare of the occupants.

Police officers, accompanied by the Fire Brigade (Bombers), arrived to investigate the source of the odour. When they contacted the owner, the individual opened the door to reveal a scene of severe neglect.

Inside, officers discovered six Sphynx cats—a distinctive hairless breed also known as Egyptian cats. The flat was littered with accumulated excrement. This filth had clearly not been cleaned for some time, creating the stench that permeated the building.

Severe neglect and dehydration for rescued Sphynx cats

The conditions for the animals were dire. Beyond the filth, the cats had no water source. Officers noted their bowls were completely bone dry. Access to food was equally limited. Police evidence showed the starving animals were forced to stick their heads inside a food bag to feed themselves. They did not have food provided in bowls.

Upon assessing the situation, agents immediately contacted the local animal protection service. The shelter has taken custody of the six cats. It will oversee their recovery and eventual rehoming to suitable owners.

The Guardia Urbana has not released specific details regarding the owner’s identity. However, they confirmed the maximum penalty under current regulations is a €750 fine. Many local animal welfare advocates consider this sum insufficient given the severity of the neglect. This action follows recent intervention by off-duty Guardia Urbana officers.
