Barcelona police are investigating a stabbing that occurred during the opening night of Poblenou’s annual festivities. According to municipal sources cited by the Catalan News Agency (ACN), emergency services were alerted around 4am after a person was injured with a bladed weapon at the junction of Rambla del Poblenou and Pere IV Street.

The victim was rushed to hospital in serious condition, though no further details about their health have been disclosed. At present, no arrests have been made, and the Guàrdia Urbana has opened an inquiry to clarify the circumstances.

The incident overshadowed the start of the neighbourhood’s popular celebrations, which run until 14 September. While these festivals are typically joyous occasions, they have sometimes been marked by disturbances. Just last month in Sants, clashes broke out between police and partygoers after officers were called to address harassment incidents at the “purple point” for women’s safety.

Despite these concerns, Barcelona recorded a 6% fall in overall crime in the first half of 2025 compared with the same period last year, with nearly 84,000 offences reported. However, drug-related cases rose by more than a quarter, and sexual assaults climbed by almost 20%.

The Poblenou festivities, a cornerstone of community life in the district, will continue as scheduled. Local authorities have stepped up patrols to reassure residents and visitors in the wake of the attack.
