Strong winds are battering Barcelona today as powerful gusts exceeding 70km/h sweep across the region.

The Meteocat weather service has activated multiple alerts for intense wind conditions affecting coastal and pre-coastal areas of Barcelona, northern Tarragona, and Central Catalonia. These conditions stem from Atlantic front Benjamin, a potent storm system currently impacting much of Europe.
Strong Winds Peak During Afternoon Hours
The windstorm reached its peak intensity between morning and mid-afternoon today. Furthermore, the strongest gusts are concentrated in Barcelona’s coastal areas, Central Catalonia, and elevated regions including the Pyrenees and Montseny. Consequently, authorities have implemented the Ventcat emergency plan to coordinate response efforts across affected municipalities.
According to recent weather-related coverage, similar extreme conditions have caused significant disruption elsewhere in the region. Meanwhile, the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has extended warnings to the Valencian Country and Balearic Islands, indicating the widespread nature of this weather event.
Temperatures have begun dropping significantly, particularly in interior areas and the Pyrenees. This marks a dramatic shift from yesterday’s summer-like conditions, when thermometers reached 30°C in the Ebre region. The change signals the definitive end of the recent warm spell known as ‘estiuet’.
Weekend Weather Shift Brings Autumn Conditions
The cooling trend will continue through the weekend, bringing distinctly autumnal conditions. Additionally, meteorological models indicate increasing instability with showers expected across the region, particularly on Sunday. Some weak, passing rainfall may occur in western counties and northern Empordà during morning hours.
In elevated areas, wind speeds could locally exceed 90-100km/h, creating hazardous conditions. The storm system has also triggered marine warnings along the coast, with rough seas expected throughout the day. Therefore, residents are advised to secure outdoor objects and exercise caution when travelling.
The original meteorological report indicates that next week may bring temperatures well below seasonal averages. Moreover, snow could reappear in the high Pyrenees between the weekend and Monday, marking an unusually early onset of winter conditions for the region.
