According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the region faces a day of widespread instability and heavy precipitation.

Storm Emilia Triggers Widespread Weather Warnings

A weather front interacting with Storm Emilia is expected to spread heavy rainfall across western Alborán, Catalonia, and particularly Castellón. Consequently, significant accumulations of 80-100 litres per square metre are forecast within a 12-hour period. The most persistent rain is anticipated during the first half of the day, especially in the Levante and southeastern peninsula.

Furthermore, the afternoon will see continued rainfall across the northeastern peninsula, though it will be less intense. Meanwhile, locally strong showers are expected by day’s end in northern Galicia, western Asturias, and the Strait of Gibraltar area. The storm’s impact extends beyond rain, with thunderstorms containing hail predicted for Mediterranean zones and the possibility of waterspouts forming.

Additionally, the snow level will settle between 1,400 and 1,600 metres in northern mountains. Morning fog banks are also expected in inland areas of the northern half and mountainous regions of the southern half. This severe weather follows other recent disruptions, including a major windstorm that sparked hundreds of emergency calls in Barcelona earlier this season.

Temperatures will drop in the Pyrenees, Alborán, and most of the western half of the peninsula. However, they will rise in the Canary Islands, the Ebro valley, and the eastern facade. Minimum temperatures will increase in the Canaries and northern half of the peninsula but decrease elsewhere, potentially reaching 1°C in areas like Zamora and Palencia. Weak frosts are also expected in the Pyrenees and isolated areas of other northern and southeastern mountains.

The wind will blow from east and south components across the Peninsula and Balearic Islands, with moderate intervals along coastlines and inland areas of the northern third. Here, very strong gusts may occur on mountain peaks. In Galicia, strong wind intervals are expected along the coast. In the Canary Islands, the wind will be moderate from the north.

Residents are advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay informed through official channels. The situation highlights the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather, much like the challenges faced in other infrastructure projects, such as the ongoing major renovation of the Plaça Catalunya escalators, which must also contend with the elements.
