Storm Harry Barcelona: Coastal Defences Activated

For businesses on the Paseo Marítimo, the arrival of Storm Harry Barcelona brings back difficult memories. Being on the front line of the sea is a privilege for hospitality venues. However, climate change is altering the risk calculation for these establishments. The situation highlights the ongoing need for public safety measures. These recently included the installation of surveillance cameras on the Barceloneta beachfront.

Marta, a worker at the Xup Xup restaurant, explained the urgency to local reporters. “A few years ago a storm ate up the beach,” she said. “It reached the restaurant.”

To prevent a repeat, the owners received municipal authorisation for a temporary sandbag barrier. This fortification aims to shield the wooden platform and furniture from the incoming surf.

An ES-Alert was sent to mobile phones in coastal municipalities shortly after midday on Monday. The message warned residents of a “significant” swell in areas including Barcelonès, Maresme, and Baix Llobregat.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution. The official guidance specifically warns citizens to respect access closures. In addition, people should stay well away from breakwaters, jetties, and seafront promenades. Waves could sweep people into the sea.

The Generalitat de Catalunya confirms the heavy swell will likely persist through Wednesday. Therefore, residents in affected coastal zones should avoid unnecessary risks near the water. These zones include parts of Girona and Tarragona.
