The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) manages the coastline. They reported that Storm Harry brought waves reaching six metres in height to Badalona. Meanwhile, waves nearly five metres high hit the Llobregat Delta. This intensity matches the devastation seen during Storm Gloria in January 2020. Storm Harry Barcelona beaches: widespread coastal destruction
The physical toll on the coastline has been extensive. In Badalona, a significant section of the Barca Maria seafront promenade collapsed. Previously, storms over Christmas had weakened it. The damage in this area is particularly acute. For instance, sand has disappeared almost entirely from both Barca Maria and Cristall beaches.
Further south, the impact was equally severe. The municipality of El Prat de Llobregat saw its coastline recede by more than 20 metres. Specifically, the Can Camins and La Roberta sectors were affected. The sea advanced far enough to reach the road. Consequently, this forced traffic closures and damaged protected dune systems.
Infrastructure losses include over 300 metres of wooden walkways. Additionally, 50 benches and numerous shower platforms were lost. These were left without foundations due to sand erosion. In Barcelona city, the damage extended to the public address system. It was knocked out of service.
Systemic erosion and climate risks for Barcelona beaches
The AMB report highlights that these damages are not isolated incidents. Instead, they are part of a cumulative problem. The “artificialisation” of the coastline prevents natural sand replenishment. When a storm strikes, sand washes away and does not return naturally.
Metropolitan sources emphasise that climate change drives this fragility. They note that higher sea levels and more frequent, energetic storms expose the coast to constant regression. In Gavà alone, some areas lost 40 metres of sand width. Furthermore, 400 metres of dune frontage vanished.
Urgent call for structural solutions after Storm Harry
Local officials argue that municipal maintenance is no longer enough. The scale of the crisis requires more. Therefore, the AMB has issued an urgent request to the Ministry for Ecological Transition. They seek long-term structural interventions to stabilise the beaches.
Ramon Torra, manager of the AMB, stated that emergency sand replenishment is now essential. Additionally, coastal protection measures are critical. He warned that without immediate action, future storms could threaten critical infrastructure. This includes the railway line.

Cleanup and recovery protocols for damaged beaches
Beyond the structural damage, Storm Harry created a significant environmental challenge. Flooding from the Llobregat and Besòs rivers washed approximately 100 tonnes of waste onto the beaches. Moreover, reeds were also deposited. This accumulation is expected to continue in the coming weeks.
The AMB has activated its post-storm protocol to restore normality. Currently, teams are working to level the remaining sand. They are also repositioning displaced furniture and removing dangerous debris. However, officials warn that full recovery requires more than cleaning. Indeed, it requires a fundamental shift in how the coast is protected against an increasingly volatile climate.
