Storm Nils Barcelona has prompted a red alert from the City Council. Consequently, officials warn residents and tourists to avoid the coastline. Strong wind warnings are in effect across the Catalan capital.

Despite the severe conditions, the sea remains deceptively calm. However, the council is taking no chances. Urban Guard vans now patrol the promenade between Bogatell and Mar Bella. Their mission is to prevent people from venturing onto breakwaters where sudden gusts pose a serious danger.

Storm Nils Barcelona: Public Reaction

The warnings have cleared much of the Sant Martí beachfront. Meanwhile, a few determined locals ignored the advice. Among them was Morgan, from Brittany, France, who appeared unbothered by the gale.

“I’m from Brittany; this is not wind,” he remarked while walking his dog. “Is it a breeze? No, of course not, but it isn’t serious. Where my father lives, gusts reach 150 kilometres per hour—that is normal.”

He added that he felt the government reaction might be excessive. “They prefer to prevent people from going out and take away a bit of their freedom rather than take a little risk. But it’s normal, nothing is happening.”

Storm Nils Barcelona Causes Street Disruption

While the sea stayed tranquil, the streets of Poblenou told a different story. The force of the wind has felled branches and carpeted pavements with debris. On Carrer de Ramon Turró, at least three large waste containers overturned.

Runners and walkers adjusted their routines. Jerónimo Ruiz, a local resident, decided to cut his daily walk short. “It is an annoying wind to go out in,” he said against a backdrop of distant sirens. “I feel sorry for those who have to work outside.”

Others found a silver lining. Dog owners Rubén, Inma, and Ezequiel ventured onto the sand at Bogatell. They noted the conditions were preferable to the city centre. “Here on the beach is where it is best; it is much worse inside the city,” said Ezequiel. “The dogs are more at ease because today there are far fewer people.”

For the city’s homeless population, Storm Nils Barcelona brought a restless night. One man, checking his tent near Mar Bella, noted the wind woke him several times. “It has been something different,” he said. “But there have been more complicated nights, like a day when it rained with ice.”
