Storm Nils power outages have left more than 30,000 homes across Northern Catalonia without electricity. Severe gale-force winds from the storm have battered the region. The power grid operator Enedis confirmed the widespread outages at midday. Consequently, the electricity supply network has sustained significant damage due to the intense weather conditions.

These outages compound an already critical situation in the French department of Pyrénées-Orientales. Authorities temporarily raised the weather warning to a maximum red alert earlier in the day. Emergency notifications were transmitted directly to residents’ mobile phones. Meanwhile, the warning has since been downgraded to an orange alert. However, officials continue to urge extreme caution.

Storm Nils Power Outages Halt Transport and Block Roads

The storm’s impact has effectively paralysed local infrastructure. Public road transport has been suspended across almost the entire territory. Exceptions are limited to the mountainous Cerdanya and Capcir areas. Reports from the ground indicate numerous road blockages caused by fallen trees. In addition, high winds have led to incidents of overturned trucks on exposed routes.

Municipalities across the region are grappling with the blackout. Coastal and inland towns including Vilallonga de la Salanca, Vingrau, Bulaternera, and Ansinyà have reported interruptions. The prefecture has also identified disruptions in interior communes such as La Bastida, Caramany, and Prunet i Bellpuig.

Emergency Services Under Pressure from Storm Nils Power Outages

Emergency responders are currently stretched to their limit. The Firefighters of the Eastern Pyrenees report being overwhelmed by a surge in calls. Therefore, they have issued a plea to residents to contact them only in life-threatening situations. This follows similar reports of local emergency services being stretched thin, as shown by the over 1,000 emergency calls logged due to strong winds in other parts of Catalonia. To assist the strained local units, military personnel from the civil security corps have been deployed to the department. Furthermore, additional reinforcements are expected to arrive shortly.

Enedis has issued strict safety warnings, reminding the public to stay well clear of any fallen power lines. Residents must treat all cables on the ground as live and dangerous.

In response to the crisis, the Secours Populaire (French Popular Relief) has launched an urgent appeal for solidarity. The organisation is mobilising volunteers to assist affected families. Moreover, it has opened a donation campaign to fund emergency aid. The organisation warns that the recovery process may be prolonged.

With the storm still active, authorities have not ruled out further incidents in the coming hours. Technical teams remain on the ground. They are working to restore power as quickly as safety conditions allow.
