Authorities have issued strong wind warnings across large swathes of eastern Spain. Consequently, Catalonia, the Valencia region, and the Balearic Islands are bracing for days of intense gusts and hazardous coastal conditions.
A combination of meteorological systems, including Storm Nils, has prompted emergency services to activate alerts. Therefore, preventive measures are now in place, including the closure of public parks in several cities.

Strong Wind Warnings Trigger Catalonia’s VENCAT Plan
In Catalonia, Civil Protection has activated the VENCAT emergency plan. Forecasts suggest that winds could exceed 72 km/h (45 mph) on Wednesday. This will particularly affect the pre-coastal and coastal areas of Barcelona and Tarragona.
The weather system is expected to expand across the rest of the region by Thursday. Meanwhile, as the week progresses into the weekend, the most severe conditions will likely shift towards the Pyrenees, the Pre-Pyrenees, Empordà, and Terres de l’Ebre.
With many towns celebrating carnival, officials have urged the public to exercise extreme caution. This is especially important during outdoor activities and parades.
Gusts Over 100 km/h in Valencia Amid Strong Wind Warnings
The situation is equally volatile in the Valencia region, where strong westerly winds have triggered significant disruptions. Yellow warnings were issued early on Tuesday for the interior areas of Valencia and Castelló. However, these were upgraded to orange in central districts by midday as gusts threatened to surpass 100 km/h (62 mph).
In response to the safety risks, several municipalities—including Valencia city, Xàtiva, and Torrent—have closed public spaces and suspended outdoor events. In addition, this wind episode is accompanied by a sharp rise in temperatures. Coastal areas may see highs of nearly 25°C.
Storm Nils Batters the Balearics
Meanwhile, the Balearic Islands are feeling the effects of Storm Nils, characterised by strong southeasterly winds and rough seas. The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) issued yellow warnings starting Tuesday afternoon. These cover the coasts of Ibiza, Formentera, and southern Mallorca, forecasting gusts of up to 60 km/h and waves reaching four metres.
The alerts are set to widen on Wednesday to cover all coastlines and the Serra de Tramuntana, where speeds may hit 70 km/h. Furthermore, by Thursday, the situation is expected to intensify further. An orange warning will come into effect for northeastern Mallorca and Menorca, where winds could reach speeds of up to 90 km/h.
