The incident unfolded in Tarragona’s Plaça Josep Sentís i Porta shortly before 7 PM. Emergency services quickly received calls reporting an apartment fire and dispatched a multi-agency response. This included four units from the Bombers de la Generalitat (Catalonia’s fire service), personnel from the Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) (Catalonia’s medical emergency service), officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalonia’s autonomous police force), and local Guàrdia Urbana officers.

Violent Confrontation

Upon arrival, the apartment’s resident confronted emergency teams. According to reports, the man, who was experiencing a mental health episode, behaved violently and aggressively. He allegedly tried to prevent firefighters from accessing the building, threatening them with a cutter (also known as a box cutter or utility knife).

This created significant tension for both emergency services and local residents witnessing the events. The blaze sent a column of smoke billowing from a window, raising concerns about its potential to spread. Mossos d’Esquadra officers tried to de-escalate the situation by speaking with the man. However, they were ultimately forced to subdue and disarm him, seizing the cutter.

Arrest and Charges

After being subdued, SEM paramedics assessed the man. The Mossos d’Esquadra then formally arrested him. He faces charges of arson against his own property and assaulting agents of authority. Authorities have not released the suspect’s nationality or any prior criminal record.

Firefighters quickly gained access to the apartment and extinguished the fire. The blaze was contained relatively quickly, preventing it from spreading or causing further damage or injuries. However, the fire reportedly damaged a portion of the ground floor apartment.

Aftermath and Investigation

The incident in Tarragona highlights the challenges faced by emergency services when dealing with individuals experiencing mental health crises. The swift response of the Bombers de la Generalitat prevented a potentially larger fire from developing, while the Mossos d’Esquadra ensured the safety of the public and emergency personnel. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

This incident occurred on Friday, February 21, 2026, around 7 PM.
