A tawny owlet rescue was performed by officers from Barcelona’s Urban Guard (Guardia Urbana). They saved a young tawny owl showing clear signs of malnutrition in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district. This intervention highlights the delicate intersection of city life and the local wildlife population inhabiting the fringes of the Collserola mountain range.

Tawny owlet rescue: Discovery in Can Sentmenat

The tawny owlet rescue took place early on Wednesday morning. A patrol was alerted to the bird’s presence in the Jardines de Can Sentmenat. While tawny owls are the most abundant nocturnal birds of prey in Barcelona, they are typically elusive residents of Collserola’s wooded areas.

According to reports, the owlet had ventured into the urban park, likely in search of food. Meanwhile, officers noted the animal appeared weak and was suffering from evident malnutrition symptoms. Therefore, they launched an immediate rescue operation to ensure its survival.

Tawny owlet rescue: Rehabilitation and release

Following the rescue, the Urban Guard handed the bird over to the Rural Agents (Agents Rurals). Consequently, the owlet has been transferred to the Torreferrussa Wildlife Recovery Centre. This specialised facility is dedicated to rehabilitating native fauna.

Veterinary staff at the centre will monitor the bird’s condition as it regains strength. In addition, once it has made a full recovery, the plan is to release the owl back into a secure natural environment. This release will occur in a more suitable forest habitat, away from the potential hazards of Barcelona’s urban parks.
