The squatter movement in Terrassa has taken over a derelict industrial site, the former Cardona laundry, turning it into a new hub for activities despite warnings from the local council that the building is unsafe.

The complex consists of three warehouses connected by a courtyard, a chimney and a raised walkway. Occupation began at the end of August, months after the group was evicted in March from two long-standing centres. Activists say the space will host assemblies, local community workshops and activities that once took place in the Kasalet, their previous base.

The city council, however, insists the premises pose serious structural risks, citing damaged roofs, weakened beams and deteriorated fibrocement panels. A technical inspection in early September concluded the property was unfit for use, recommending preventive measures to avoid further degradation or potential collapse.

Police visited the premises alongside municipal engineers shortly after the occupation, echoing the safety concerns. Activists dispute the assessment, arguing that critical areas have been sealed off and accusing the authorities of harassment.

The standoff highlights the long-running tension between Terrassa’s squatter movement and municipal authorities, with both sides standing firm. For now, the site remains occupied, though its future is uncertain as legal and safety challenges mount.
