A hidden gem in the heart of Barcelona has been shuttered for over a year, but locals will have to wait until 2026 to sip coffee there again. The café at the Convent de Sant Agustí Civic Centre, renowned for its medieval architecture and serene setting, closed its doors in July 2024 after its operator, Sant Pere Food Services, gave up its concession.

The bar, tucked away in Ciutat Vella, had become a favourite spot for both neighbours and visitors who stumbled upon it while exploring the convent’s gothic cloisters. Its closure has been keenly felt, as the space once served as both a cultural hub and a meeting point in one of Barcelona’s busiest districts.

Barcelona City Council has confirmed that refurbishment works are under way on the café and its facilities, including the lavatories, in preparation for a new tender. Officials expect the public competition for a fresh operator to open soon, with the aim of reopening the bar in spring 2026.

The council has also signalled that future bidders will need to align the café’s offer with the cultural programming of the civic centre, as well as foster ties with local associations. That balance between community and commerce could determine whether the bar retains its unique charm once it reopens.

For now, one of the city’s most picturesque cafés remains silent — a reminder of how cultural spaces can disappear swiftly, even in a city brimming with tourism.

If the plans stay on track, Barcelona will welcome back one of its most distinctive cafés in 2026, hopefully restored to its role as a haven for residents and curious visitors alike.
