Thousands of vehicles flood Barcelona’s streets every day, creating jams and making journey times considerably longer. Whilst navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze offer alternatives, sometimes there’s no avoiding certain streets packed with drivers.

Daily exposure to heavy traffic has serious health consequences. The congestion triggers irritability, stress and anxiety from noise and delays, which can lead to insomnia and cardiovascular problems like hypertension. Meanwhile, it can worsen conditions like depression.
In large cities, the high concentration of people and vehicles generates elevated pollution levels. This can cause respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases and various types of cancer. According to the WHO, air pollution causes around 7 million deaths annually.
Barcelona has already taken measures to reduce pollution with initiatives like ‘superilles’ – urban spaces that prioritise pedestrians and reduce car presence. Still, according to Barcelona City Council data from 2024 analysed by Acn agency, some stretches concentrate up to 60,000 daily vehicles.
The junction of Carrer Aragó with Carrer de Bailèn tops the list. It registers an average intensity of 55,306 vehicles daily, rising to 60,000 on weekdays. This makes it the busiest point in the entire Catalan capital.
In second place sits Carrer Aragó with Muntaner, accumulating around 53,000 daily vehicles. Finally, Gran Via with Pau Claris sees 50,000.
Despite these figures, overall traffic volume in 2024 has decreased compared to 2023. According to municipal data, out of 800 traffic measurement points analysed, 55% showed reduced volumes compared to 2023.
