The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 AM on Saturday, 28 February, at a hospital in the Vallcarca i els Penitents neighbourhood. According to reports, the suspect approached the woman, a patient at the facility, and forcibly took her mobile phone before making a quick escape on foot.
The victim’s cries for help immediately alerted nearby patrol officers from the Guàrdia Urbana de Barcelona. The officers gave chase as the suspect fled towards the entrance of the Penitents metro station, likely hoping to disappear into the transport network. However, the police were able to intercept and apprehend him before he could enter the station.
Swift Police Action Halts Metro Escape
The rapid response from the municipal police was critical in thwarting the thief’s escape. Once detained, officers searched the suspect and found the stolen mobile phone in his possession. He was subsequently arrested and is now facing charges of robbery with violence.
In line with its standard procedure, the police force has not released further details about the detainee, such as his age or nationality. The force operates under the authority of the Ajuntament de Barcelona.
The Catalan news outlet El Caso initially reported the incident.
A Pattern of Street Crime
This arrest marks another successful intervention by city police against street-level crime. It follows a separate incident on 11 February, when Guàrdia Urbana officers arrested a man moments after he had snatched a necklace from a woman’s neck.
Theft, particularly of mobile phones and luxury watches, remains a persistent issue in Barcelona. Recent events have seen criminals employ a range of tactics, from distraction techniques to direct assault. Barna.News has previously reported on cases involving thieves targeting victims inside taxis and even an off-duty officer who detained a knife-wielding phone thief. These incidents underscore the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in safeguarding residents and tourists in the bustling Catalan capital.
While this particular robbery was resolved quickly, public concern over safety and violent crime continues to be a prominent topic in some city neighbourhoods. Reports of assaults have previously raised alarm among residents in areas like Poble Sec, highlighting the importance of visible and responsive policing.
