Swine fever alert protocols have been activated across the Vallès region after three dead wild boars were discovered in a single afternoon.
The discoveries, made on Wednesday along the B-124 road and a railway line, are considered key indicators for monitoring the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF).
Authorities have implemented reinforced biosecurity measures.

Consequently, the controlled removal of the animals and sample collection for analysis is now underway.
Swine Fever Alert Triggers Transport Disruptions
The first two boars were found on the B-124 road between Sabadell and Castellar del Vallès. The incidents, occurring just metres apart, forced the temporary closure of a traffic lane. Furthermore, a third boar was struck by a train on the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat S2 line near Cerdanyola Universitat station later that day.
This incident disrupted train frequencies while safety protocols were applied. According to reports, the frequency remains altered as biosecurity measures dictated by the rural agents (Agents Rurals) are enforced. This action follows a swine fever outbreak decreed in the nearby Collserola area weeks ago.
The disease poses no risk to human health. However, it represents a significant threat to Catalonia’s vital pork industry. Early detection and rapid response are therefore critical to prevent the virus from spreading to local livestock.
Authorities are reminding the public that any discovery of dead boars must be reported immediately to emergency services on 112. The animals must not be touched or manipulated under any circumstances. This latest event follows the removal of another boar struck by a vehicle between Sant Quirze and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) on 2 December.
The situation highlights ongoing challenges in managing wildlife and disease at the urban-rural interface. Meanwhile, the city continues to adapt its environment, as seen in recent initiatives to introduce drought-resistant trees citywide.
