Thousands of vehicles flood Barcelona daily, creating congestion that significantly increases journey times. Despite navigation apps like Google Maps offering alternatives, some streets remain unavoidably packed with drivers.

Daily exposure to heavy traffic damages mental health. It causes irritability, stress, and anxiety from noise and congestion. Consequently, people suffer insomnia, cardiovascular problems like hypertension, and worsening depression.

High concentrations of people and vehicles generate severe pollution levels in cities. This leads to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and various cancers. According to the WHO, air pollution causes around 7 million deaths annually worldwide.

Barcelona’s busiest traffic spots

Barcelona City Council is tackling pollution through initiatives like superilles (superblocks). These urban spaces prioritise pedestrians and reduce car presence on streets.

Nevertheless, according to 2024 council data analysed by ACN, some sections still concentrate up to 60,000 daily vehicles. The junction of Carrer Aragó with Carrer de Bailèn tops the list. It records an average of 55,306 vehicles daily, rising to 60,000 on weekdays.

Second place goes to Carrer Aragó with Muntaner, accumulating around 53,000 vehicles daily. Gran Via with Pau Claris comes third with 50,000.

However, overall traffic volume in 2024 has decreased compared to 2023. Municipal data shows that 55% of 800 traffic measurement points recorded lower volumes than last year. Still, 36% of sections see more vehicles than in 2023.
