Tiziana Domínguez, creative director and granddaughter of founder Adolfo Domínguez, has showcased the Spanish fashion house's 50-year heritage at 080 Barcelona Fashion with a collection titled El Número, which reinterprets archive pieces from the past five decades through a contemporary lens.
The collection, developed over six months, drew particular inspiration from the 1980s and 1990s archive. "We took the opportunity to go to the archive, the foundation and history of our brand, and at the same time, go down to the pattern. The number, which is beneath any object, is its pattern," Domínguez explained, according to Metrópoli Abierta. The conceptual approach allowed the creative team to explore decades of design history whilst maintaining present-day relevance.
Tailoring at the core
Tailoring remains the central pillar of Adolfo Domínguez, a legacy stemming from founder Adolfo Domínguez's craftsmanship background. The collection featured sharp-shouldered blazers combined with 1990s draping elements, minimalist necklines, and contemporary denim details.
"We present tailor-made jackets with very marked shoulders, but at the same time with 1990s drapes, with perfectly traced minimalist necklines mixed with the denim that so characterises the current era," Domínguez described. This blend showcased how archival references could inform modern silhouettes without sacrificing wearability.
The brand's philosophy emphasises authenticity and individual expression through relaxed volumetry, fluidity, and layered compositions. Domínguez noted that what the industry now terms genderless fashion has been part of the brand's DNA since its inception, rooted in 1980s unisex movements that advanced gender equality.
Barcelona's significance
080 Barcelona Fashion relocated to Port Vell for this edition, presenting a more open, contemporary vision of the city. The venue held particular resonance for Adolfo Domínguez; the brand sourced fabrics from Sabadell and opened its first flagship store on Paseo de Gràcia.
"Barcelona is like home and it has been an honour to come and parade here," Domínguez said. She praised the fashion show's focus on emerging designers, describing it as "fresh, young and vibrant." However, she refrained from committing to future participation, stating she does not know whether the brand will return to 080's next edition.
Global strategy
Adolfo Domínguez has adopted an itinerant approach to showcasing collections. Over the past seven years, the brand has staged nine shows across different cities including Ourense, Dubai, Santiago de Chile, and Barcelona, reflecting its international client base and global presence since its 1976 founding.
"Our approach is to remain in contact with all our customers worldwide," Domínguez explained. This strategy prioritises direct engagement with diverse markets over reliance on a single fashion calendar, positioning the brand as genuinely international whilst maintaining Spanish roots.
