Barcelona’s second-most photographed building after the Sagrada Família celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Torre Glòries, the distinctive bullet-shaped skyscraper designed by Jean Nouvel, has evolved from controversial project to beloved Barcelona landmark, now reaching peak occupancy as major tenant changes loom.

Torre Glòries opened in September 2005 as Torre Agbar, housing Aigües de Barcelona’s headquarters. However, the water company never occupied the entire 34-storey structure. Twenty years on, Torre Glòries stands at 100% occupancy with approximately 20 companies sharing the innovative office space.
From Agbar to Torre Glòries: A Journey of Transformation
Torre Glòries has undergone multiple ownership changes and identity shifts. In 2013, Aigües de Barcelona sold the building to Emin Capital, who initially planned to convert it into a luxury hotel. Those plans stalled during Ada Colau’s hotel moratorium, despite having preliminary certificates. Subsequently, Merlin Properties purchased Torre Glòries for €142 million in 2017, investing an additional €15 million in renovations.

After nearly three years closed for refurbishment, the building reopened in May 2018 as Torre Glòries. “We’re in a transcendent space and beyond offices, from the beginning we wanted to open this iconic building to the city,” explains Itziar Aretxaga, Merlin Properties’ Barcelona office director.
Strategic Location at Barcelona’s Future Centre
Torre Glòries’s location wasn’t accidental. Santi Mercadé, managing director of Layetana Inmobiliaria, recognised the strategic value of land that urban planner Cerdà had designated as the future city centre. “We wanted to build the lighthouse that would illuminate the new Barcelona,” Mercadé recalls. The Diagonal avenue had just opened to the sea when construction began in 1999.
Choosing Jean Nouvel as architect proved transformative for Torre Glòries. Mercadé wanted someone Mediterranean who would create something special. “We thought of Renzo Piano and Jean Nouvel,” he says. Whilst Piano’s office proved difficult to reach, Nouvel responded immediately. A single dinner in Barcelona sealed the collaboration.
Major Tenant Changes and Future Flexibility
CCC Barcelona Digital Services, currently occupying ten floors at Torre Glòries, will vacate next year. “We’re studying possibilities, all options are open,” says Aretxaga. The vacant space could house one large company, ten smaller firms, or flexible combinations. The building has always maintained adaptability, with four floors dedicated to flexible workspace available by the month, day or hour.
Torre Glòries operates 24/7 and offers amenities including meeting rooms for 2-120 people, a gymnasium, employee restaurant, and a 300-person auditorium. The building houses tech companies (fitting for the 22@ district at its feet) alongside financial, real estate and insurance firms.
Skyline Observation Deck Joins Global Elite
The Torre Glòries observation deck opening in May 2022 marked a turning point. At 130 metres on the 30th floor, the mirador offers panoramic city views and features an installation by artist Tomás Saraceno. Since opening, 350,000 visitors have experienced the “Hipermirador” ground-floor exhibition by Mediapro before ascending to the viewing platform.
This addition earned Torre Glòries membership in the World Federation of Great Towers, alongside the Empire State Building, Petronas Towers, Chicago Skydeck and Eiffel Tower. “The mirador serves to add value to the building, the city and its architecture,” says director Aleix Pratdepàdua.
The newly opened park at Torre Glòries’s base has revitalised the neighbourhood, though Pratdepàdua believes the area hasn’t yet reached its full potential. Torre Glòries continues evolving, maintaining its position as a Barcelona icon whilst adapting to changing tenant needs and urban development.
