Torrential rains have paralysed Barcelona and its metropolitan area, creating a chaotic afternoon of severe flooding, road closures, and major transport disruptions.

The intense downpour, which began around 4pm, has led to over 20 kilometres of traffic jams at the critical Nus de la Trinitat interchange, according to reports from El Periódico.

Widespread Transport Chaos Grips The City

Catalonia’s Civil Protection agency activated the Inuncat emergency flood plan, warning that heavy rains would continue until at least 8pm.

Consequently, the situation remains highly volatile. The worst flooding has been recorded in Badalona, where a significant torrent has formed. Officials have urged extreme caution, particularly near rivers, streams, and flood-prone areas.

The road network has borne the brunt of the disruption. More than 16 kilometres of tailbacks clogged the Ronda Litoral, with another 10 kilometres of congestion reported on the Ronda de Dalt near the Nus de la Trinitat. Furthermore, flooding on the B-20 in Santa Coloma de Gramenet forced the closure of the northbound carriageway and reduced southbound traffic to a single lane.

Major arteries including the C-31, C-32, C-33, and C-58 are all experiencing severe congestion and delays on approaches to the city. An accident on the AP-7 near Mollet del Vallès has compounded the problems, causing lengthy queues. Authorities are therefore advising against all non-essential travel into the Barcelonès area.

Public Transport Hit By Severe Disruptions

The public transport network has also been severely impacted. Metro Line L3 has been suspended for several hours between Paral·lel and Passeig de Gràcia due to an electrical fault at Liceu and Catalunya stations. Additionally, Line L2 is not running between Artigues, Sant Adrià and Badalona Pompeu Fabra.

Several bus lines, including the H14, H2, V23, and 19, have been forced to alter their routes due to road obstructions. Transport authorities are actively assisting passengers in finding alternative travel options during the ongoing crisis.
